A common portrayal in dance is that a ‘dancing body’ merely executes forms, codes and space related actions; however I see the dancing body as a speaking body.  To ‘speak’ he must source his sensations and draw upon his most existential needs buried deep within.  By doing this we will review and disorientate both the dancing body itself and the perception of it.

I do not believe in the idea of an organic body; I believe the body is an accumulation of history, knowledge, social themes and experiences, both of the body and the mind. By using certain exercises, formats, we will try and reach the person that carries all these bodies.
We will question the rules that are the base of a perfect choreography concentrating on communication, experience, playing with perspectives, exploring the process of the performer, the rules and the agreements to be followed.
Firstly there is the process of developing material.  Following on from that there is a focus on the tense relationship between the rational side of the performer and his physical side, his body. Adding on to these we will explore a way of constructing scores, where set structure coupled by improvisation give space to the performer to re-experience his body. Finally there is how the spectator could sneak under the skin of the performer.

During the workshop we will work on dance material, which originates from the physical transformation of a movement impulse. We will focus on a methodology of how to break patterns of movements by stimulating the analytical ability to manipulate and fragment the movement material in several layers. This will result in a conscious and unconscious detailed use of limbs, weight, space, and often forgotten details like facial expressions, gestures and utterings of the voice.

The exercises used will involve a specific application of improvisation.
We will work on developing skills and methods how to combine structure and improvisation, freedom of imagination and codified language.
We will explore the possibilities of layering the different tasks of the performer, creating a score of impulses, actions and situations that could consist on a scene, where the body as independent medium becomes the main player.

The aim of the workshop is explore an individual process that can enable us to express a certain idea through a speaking body, using choreography to direct the process of the performer and the spectator.
