Cycle of Workshops

Cycle of Workshops

The Cycle is a collaboration between The ART LAB, Gabriella Maiorino and Talile dance company where young, though experienced, choreographers are invited, every month and a half, to give a workshop, sharing their movement language and opening to students their ways and tools of researching and composing.
The ART LAB invites young though experienced choreographers who will propose every month and a half, a workshop where they share their movement language; they open to the students their ways and tools of researching and composing.
Those choreographers will deal with spatial awareness and how they make use of a performative space. The ways they imagine the performative act and how they mentally and physically construct their own idea of bodies will be shared.
This is a unique possibility to get to know from the inside the specific methodology of each choreographer.

It is a chance for the students to create a small composition with the tools and performative guide of those selected choreographers.
There will be a final performance at the end of this Cycle of workshops which will give the possibility for the students to present their work and to share feedbacks with each other and with the different choreographers.
The student can choose to follow all the appointments or only few of them.

Giulia_muredduThe lingual body
Workshop by Giulia Mureddu

20st Nov 12.30pm - 5pm
21st Nov 12.30pm - 5pm
22st Nov 12.30pm - 5pm

A common portrayal in dance is that a ‘dancing body’ merely executes forms, codes and space related actions; however I see the dancing body as a speaking body.  To ‘speak’ he must source his sensations and draw upon his most existential needs buried deep within.  By doing this we will review and disorientate both the dancing body itself and the perception of it.

I do not believe in the idea of an organic body; I believe the body is an accumulation of history, knowledge, social themes and experiences, both of the body and the mind. By using certain exercises, formats, we will try and reach the person that carries all these bodies.

Cultivating Inspiration

personal poetics, telescopic awareness and the role of structure in creative practice

23/10, 16h00-20h00
24/10 & 25/10, 13h00-18h00
Part of the cycle of workshops, read more here >

HilaryThis workshop aims to support the on-going evolution of several vital and idiosyncratic facets of art making. Namely: fostering a personal relationship with the (choreographic) process, developing an understanding of how to cultivate a state of inspirability, and honing the capacity to alternate between immersion in and critical reflection upon the work. These are my own questions, fascinations and meta-themes as I approach creating...

During the course of the weekend, we will view the studio as a laboratory where strategies for each of these aspects, as well as for the act of translating idea/inspiration/fascination into form, are tested, refined or rejected. By observing one’s process, its strategies, patterns and poetics, we can each emerge with a keener sense of what constitutes, supports and boisters our individual work.

Each day begins with a period of guided warming up and exploration, awakening an appetite for the physical. We begin at the source with the composition of the body: its organization of biological matter (physical layers of skin, muscles, bones, fluids, eyes, brain, cells…) and experience (memory, desire, feeling, imagination, perception, curiousity, expectation, opinion...).

Kenzo_Kusuda_portrait__photo_by_Tara_FallauxVitalizing the Invisible / Dance & Improvisation
Workshop by KENZO KUSUDA

Inevitably linking with breathing, seeing, listening, sensing, touching and feeling, we will focus on the power of imagination as an anchor to our dancing.

In this workshop “ Vitalizing the Invisible “, we aim to enhance the elasticity of our physical, actual body and our visionary, imaginary body which are both real and convincing in expression / communication.

We explore the potentiality for our dancing body as a catalytic medium through which things can transform, inspire, provoke, interact and integrate with any possible environments / situations around ( or in ) us. Read more here (LINK NAAR PAGINA ‘WORKSHOPS/ WORKSHOP CYCLE/KENZO KUSUDA)

THE BODY, THE DYNAMIC ENERGY,
THE USE OF EMOTIONS IN DANCE CREATION

WORKSHOP on Dance Performance and Movement Research by Gabriella Maiorino

6, 7 & 8 March 2009

  • 6th March 16h-20h
  • 7th / 8th March 14h-18h
    Fee: 100€
    at The Art Laboratory
    Ottho Heldringstraat 3, Amsterdam

Improvisational tools and original composed materials are proposed in order to connect physicality, images and mind. Control\ letting go in dance performance and movement research will be some of the tools that Gabriella will share with the students in this workshop.
The choreographer will also work on floor work, alone and with partnering in order to explore different consistencies of the body itself. Gabriella and the students will work on different emotional/ performative states and rhythmical possibilities that can be found in relation with specific uses of the weight which will be chosen during improvised and set works.

One of the main focus of the workshop is the relation between a totally emotional and imaginative body and the refinement of the most subtle tools of a controlled performing energy.

In the workshop the students will work towards sing/improvising a dance solo with the direction, tips and tools that Gabriella Maiorino will share.

Jack_GThe Pragmatic Material of Physical Discourse - from language to body or from body to language?

By Jack Gallagher the 24th, 25th and 26th of July
Part of the Cycle of Workshops

Jack Gallagher will materialize in an open and non-dogmatic way a workshop oriented toward personal searches for the so called 'magic' of dance: its particular communicative and Gallagher will draw upon his practice based on the body as a Substance. We will look for a vocabulary consisting out of your material being. Or is your material being constructed out of a vocabulary? This workshop approaches the body's modes of being as "material" in the artistic sense, to be discovered, rediscovered, defined and refined according to one's personal mission.
